{Ad - Gifted} A few weeks ago I was kindly gifted a Derma Roller and some goodies to give a try from DermaRollerSystem (you can check out their website here). I have been wanting to try a Derma Roller for ages so I was very excited to give this gadget a go. There are so many benefits with using a derma roller so I wanted to see if the hype was all true.

What is a Derma Roller?

A Derma Roller is a roller that contains a lot of tiny needles. These rollers are used to create micro holes to the skin (sounds scary I know! but it really isn't), Microneedling then helps to produce collagen and elastin as the skin is technically working to heal itself which in turn gives the skin a more youthful look and lines will become less visible. Another key benefit of using a Derma Roller is that the microholes in the skin will allow any product that is applied straight after the treatment to soak right in and reach the deeper layers of the skin like the dermis. Working as a Beauty Therapist I have come across Micro-needling before and you can also have it done professionally where they use larger needles which can also produce blood for much quicker results but the at home derma rollers like the one I have can also work wonders if they are used properly!

What are the benefits of using a Derma Roller?

All Derma Rollers are different and have different benefits because of the size of needles that are being used. They range from 0.5mm to 2.5mm each of the needle sizes are used to help the appearance of all different skin conditions with some of the benefits including cell regeneration, anti-ageing and helping to combat light and deep scar tissue. I decided to go for the 1.0mm needles which help a whole lot of benefits, the main reason I decided to go with this needle was because of the deep scar and pore refining treatment. My main concern with my skin is spot scars and if this product helps then sign me up!

Preparation & How to use

In my little information booklet that came with my products, it has some instructions on how to prepare the skin and roller and how to use it. The first step is to clean basically everything, to make sure that no nasties get anywhere so it says to make sure that your hands are washed and the area that your working on to be extra clean. Another step is to also make sure that you have thoroughly cleansed and dried the skin.

The information booklet says that the best way to use the roller is to roll it gently over each area of the face 4 times vertically, 4 times horizontally, 4 times diagonally to the left and 4 times diagonally to the right (I know that does sound quite confusing). Then once you have finished with the roller you then should apply your chosen mask or serum. If you are using your roller in the day then after applying all of your other products you should make sure that you apply SPF for extra protection.

There were also different instructions on how many times you should use the roller a week if you have the 0.5mm you could use it up to 5 times a week and if you have the 1.0mm or above you can use it around 3-4 times a week.

First Impression

When I saw that I got this roller I was very intrigued, I've always wanted to use a derma roller but the opportunity never came up. I wanted to use this roller as soon as I got it so that night I removed all my makeup and gave it a go. I wasn't too sure on what I was expecting out of it, I didn't know if it was going to hurt or cause any redness to my skin.

After I cleansed my face twice just to make sure that all of my makeup was removed I started to use the roller on my cheeks and it definitely didn't hurt but it felt slightly strange sort of like being waxed but one hair at a time (if that makes sense). The cheeks were probably the most comfortable area to use the roller, my least favourite area was definitely my forehead. I think it may be because there isn't any fatty tissue underneath but it was definitely the least comfortable but it still didn't hurt. I could see that while I was using the roller that my skin did get slightly red which means that the blood is rising to the top of the skin which is actually what we want so that more collagen and elastin is produced.

Once I had finished using the roller its time to clean it. In the booklet, it says to put the roller head in some disinfectant which can be rubbing alcohol (surgical spirit) or hydrogen peroxide and leave it to sit for around 10 minutes then rinse in warm water. I went with the surgical spirit because I got some from the salon but you can also get some off amazon for as little as £5. While the roller was being cleaned I then went to apply one of the products that I was gifted to my skin. With my roller, I was very kindly also gifted the Derma C+ anti ageing serum and PerfectDerm Collagen Sheet Mask. I decided to test out the serum first. When I applied the serum I could instantly feel a slight tingling sensation but that didn't last long and went away pretty quickly. The product soaked into my skin extra fast and my face felt amazing.

How my skin is getting on

I have now been using this roller for around 4 weeks, I have to say that I haven't been using it as much as I should and for some weeks I only used it around twice a week just because it was late some nights and I was being pretty lazy!

Week 1 & 2
At the end of each week, I decided to take photos so you could all see if my skin has been improving. After week one I think I used the roller around 3 times as I was just extra excited to really give it a go.

In week one you can clearly see that I have a few spots on my cheeks and that's mainly because it was my time of the month (all the ladies will know what I mean), there's also a bit of shine still there, uneven skin tone and large pores which is all that I hate on my skin. I wasn't expecting miracles for only using it for 3 days so I wasn't surprised that my skin was still as it always looked. I will say though that after the first week I was still only using the serum and even though my skin didn't look amazing it did feel it.

When week 2 finished that's when I started to notice some differences in my skin, the two spots on my cheeks and the one on my skin started to look a lot less visible which is amazing because the main issue I have with my skin is that I have quite a lot of spot scarring. I probably used the roller again around 3 times that week on every other day. I also noticed that my pores were getting noticeably smaller on my nose and during the day while wearing makeup my nose, chin and forehead wasn't getting too oily and I only needed to powder around twice a day which is really good for me.

Week 3 & 4

When I took my week 3 photo I was really impressed with how my skin was looking. I could instantly tell that it was a lot clearer with most of my spots gone and I wasn't left with spot scars! What I also noticed is that my spots cleared up a lot quicker than usual and the only thing I did differently was using the roller and in week 3 I only used it twice that week. I could also tell that the shine on my skin wasn't as obvious as it had been in my week one photo. In week 3 I was still only using the Derma C+ serum after using the roller as I wanted to save the sheet mask for the last week.

For week 4 after using the roller and the anti-ageing serum for 4 weeks I could really see a difference from week one. I wasn't getting as many spots and when I did they went away a lot quicker than they did beforehand. On the last day of this week, I decided to use the PerfectDream Collagen Mask. I was really looking forward to trying out this mask but I thought I would save it until the end of my trial for this roller. After I rolled my whole face I applied the mask, I noticed straight away that the mask was drenched in product so I did actually squeezed it a little as I thought it would drip. The mask was really cooling, when I applied the mask I did feel a slight tingling but that didn't last too long. I left the mask on for around 10 minutes when I removed it my skin did feel really smooth and soft. I couldn't see much difference in the plumpness of my skin but it did feel amazing.

Will I continue to use the DermaRoller

I think I'll definitely continue to use the roller because I feel like I have had some noticeable improvements with my skin. I may not use it as often but I'm definitely going to try and use it at least once a week to keep my skin looking good!

  3. You can definitely see the changes in your skin! The forehead is my least favourite part too, it feels so strange. So interesting to read how different people's skin responds to treatment like this. I'm glad you're seeing some improvements from it! x

    1. I can’t believe how well it has actually worked for me. I really don’t like to do the forehead much so I do it as quick as I can. I’m going to carry on using it maybe once a week to see if it really does work! X

    1. I did go for the needles that are slightly bigger so I would say if anyone’s a bit scared to use one they should go for the smaller needles! It’s been working really well for me! X

  9. Oh my goodness, the difference in your skin in the fourth picture is amazing. I mean I don't think your skin was bad in the first place (!) but you look like you've been airbrushed or PhotoShopped in the last picture. I've never tried a derma roller before (although I do have a facial cleansing brush which has worked wonders), so I'm quite intrigued now. Especially as I have oily skin too. Thank you so much for such a detailed and thorough review, and for your recommendations :) Lisa x
