5 Top Tips To Take Care of Your Nails Flatlay

When we think of beauty we always think of Skincare for our face and I think the last thing we think about is nail care. Being a Beauty Therapist I always have to take care of my nails because you cannot imagine how many manicures I do in a week. In this post, I will be sharing with you all the tips I've learnt so you can take care of your nails!

Always use a cuticle oil

The first tip I'm going to give you is a very important one and its to use cuticle oil as much as you can. If you're someone who suffers from dry and brittle nails and cuticles then cuticle oil is critical to keeping your nails healthy and strong. A lot of the time people totally forget to take care of their cuticles and it really does make an impact on the condition of your nails and if you're wearing any gel polish or acrylic nails having dry cuticles will not help them last and it really isn't a lovely sight. The oil I have been loving recently and the one that we use at the salon is the CND Solar Oil which I actually have in the pen form but you can also get it in a bottle as well. This oil has been a favourite of mine since I was introduced to it at the salon and have been using it on clients (and myself) every day. This oil helps to really hydrate the cuticles as well of the nails using the added ingredient of Jojoba oil and Vitamin E. What I love about this product is that it can be used with any nail service for example after a normal polish manicure or a gel manicure. Another thing clients say to me is just that they forget to apply it so I always tell them to put it on their bedside table and apply before you go to bed!

Give your nails a break

If you are like me and you always have your nails done then this is the tip for you. Whether its a gel manicure or acrylic I would always advise people to give their nails a good break for around 4 weeks to make sure your nails are back in tip-top condition. When your nails are covered with a product constantly they don't get any air or sun and that can be damaging for the nails. I would always ask your nail tech when they think you should have a break and if they're honest they will tell you when its time and how long for. If your wondering when your nails will need a break its when they will start to be flaky, dry and they may even be braking in places, what I would do if this happens is to remove any product that you have on your nails and either go and have a normal manicure with no polish on at the end and just have nail strengthener (which ill speak about next). Giving your nails a break for around a month will help them to fully grow and you will notice that your nails will be looking a lot healthier and stronger. While your nails are on a break and if you don't get regular manicures I would definitely say to do a mini manicure as home using the Sally Hansen Cuticle Remover and then an orange stick to push the cuticles back then make sure you apply more cuticle oil!

When you're giving your nails a break always use a nail strengthener

A nail strengthener should be in everyone's nail polish collection. I probably use my OPI Nail Envy every day at the salon on clients when they are having an ordinary manicure and their nails need a good break this is the product that I always recommend them to get so they can use it at home to keep their nails strong while they're growing out. Clients also like to use this product because instead of having completely plain nails with no product, the nail strengthener adds shine to the nails and makes them look healthy. Whenever I'm giving my nails a break the nail envy is the first product I reach for to make my nails stronger and to keep them looking healthy.

Keep damaged nails short

This is a tip that I sometimes have to fight clients on because they hate cutting their nails but I promise it for their own good! If you have damaged nails (dry, flaking, cracked and broken) then letting your nails to grow long will not do you any favours and your nice manicure whether its normal polish or gel will not last. I know that the trend now is to have your nails as long as possible;e which I actually love and looks great if you have healthy nails but if your nails are damaged it doesn't look good and they will just break down. Keeping your nails short will help to let them grow back healthy and hard and then you can let them grow longer.

Use a hand cream daily

I think that hand creams should actually be apart of our skincare routine because we use our hands so much but we definitely don't take that much care of them. The bets are if you have dry hands you most likely have dry nails and cuticles. This is another very important part of the routine that people forget to do and I would say again to put it by your bed and apply it before you go to sleep with your cuticle oil. The cream that I have been using a lot recently is the Avon Planet Spa Lavender & Jasmin cream, the first thing about this cream is that you only need the smallest amount and your skin feels amazing and secondly it smells amazing and fresh.

    1. It’s actually quite common for people to have oily nails! It can be annoying when trying to get a product like shellac to stay on but regular manicures either at a salon or at home would definitely help! X

  3. Aaliyah I never thought about using a cuticle oil because I didn't see it as necessary but after reading your post I have a clearer understanding. Jojoba oil and Vitamin E oil is so soothing and healing for the skin so I can see it re-conditioning the nails to better shape! Thanks for informing me👏🏾💕

  5. It is so important that we take care of our nails - especially when we color them. We need to have a strong foundation to keep the colors locked inn. I like to give my nails a breather between polishes. Thanks for sharing all of these tips!
