Makeup Tips I've Learnt Over The Years

When I was about 14 I think that's when my obsession for makeup began and my collection began to grow. Over the years I have learnt a few tips and tricks on all different things to do with makeup either if its to help prolong the longevity of my makeup or to give my eyeshadows more pigment. In today's post, I'll be sharing with you all of the makeup tips that I've learnt over the years!

Makeup Tips I've Learnt Over The Years - Foundations

1. Mix and Match your foundations

One of my favourite tips that I have is to mix your foundations. I have quite a few different foundations which range in different shades or formulas and I never really want just one finish. I usually always mix two or more foundations together to get the right shade and finish that I love. I have found it so hard in the past to properly match my skin to a specific shade, I have gotten pretty close in the past but have never got the exact match but with this technique, it helps me create the perfect match. I will say though that I think if you're going to do this technique that if you have picked a foundation with one finish like matte then the other should be the same finish just to make sure that it sets on the skin properly. The foundations that I have been mixing a lot recently is my Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation and my CoverFX Custom Cover Drops, I like to mix these foundations because I love the finish and full coverage of the Double Wear foundation but the Coverfx foundation is slightly darker in shade which means that I created my perfect foundation. I also like mixing foundations with lightening or darkening drops like The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops which you can add to any foundation product to create a shade just right for you.

Makeup Tips I've Learnt Over The Years - Powders

2. Only bake when necessary

A few years ago the baking trend was born at first, I had no idea what it actually meant but when I found out I used the technique a lot. Baking has been used in the drag community for years but only in the last few years has it been used more in other parts of the beauty industry, The technique is where you add translucent powder and leave it to sit on your face for around 5 minutes and the heat from your face helps to set your foundation and concealer to stop creasing. The technique itself is really great and works for me perfectly but I have found that sometimes people (me included) use it way too much and it can make the skin look cakey. My tip for this is to just be mindful of when you use it and how much powder you actually use. I only use a very small amount of powder on my under eyes and around my nose just to help my foundation last properly on my skin. For my baking, I usually use my GOSH Prime and Set Powder, I like to use this product because firstly it's very finely milled so it doesn't make me look cakey and it doesn't give me any flashback which can happen with certain translucent powders.

Makeup Tips I've Learnt Over The Years - Highlighters

3. Always apply liquid highlighters before any powder products

I learnt this tip the hard way, I had applied my full face of makeup with setting powder and everything and then I decided to apply a liquid highlighter on top and as soon as I started to blend it out it looked terrible! It removed my foundation and I was left with a very patchy face. To stop this from happening all you have to do is one simple step, Remeber to apply any liquid products before any powder this also includes powder bronzer or blush products. To remember to do this (my memory isn't the greatest) I like to lay out all of the makeup products that I'm going to use and then separate them, Ill put all my liquid products to one side and the powder on the other and this helps me to remember to apply all liquid products before any powder!

Makeup Tips I've Learnt Over The Years - Setting Spray

4. Wet eyeshadow brushes with setting spray for extra pigment

This is actually a tip that I learnt from watching hundreds of youtube videos over the years. I have had palettes in the past that look amazing in the pan but don't always apply that well on this lids and these are usually shimmer shades. When you want to pack on a certain shade on the lip to add extra pigment to that colour I usually spray my shadow brush with a little bit of setting spray, this helps more pigment cling to the brush and then apply to the eyes. The only thing I would be aware of is to not make the brush too wet because the shadow will then not pick up enough product. This tip will also help keep your eyeshadow in place all day. Recently for this tip I have been using the Gerard Cosmetics Slay All Day Setting Spray in Lemongrass because I find it lets out a really fine mist and it smells amazing. I like to use this tip a lot during the summer as I have oilier lids and the extra spray keeps my shadow looking extra vibrant.

Makeup Tips I've Learnt Over The Years - Makeup Brushes

5. Regularly clean your makeup brushes and sponges!

This tip is pretty self-explanatory but I knew I needed to add it because a lot of us (me included) forget for ages to deep clean our brushes. I must admit I have gone a couple of weeks without cleaning my brushes before out of laziness and I paid the price. I found that my makeup didn't apply as nicely to my skin and I actually also got spots because of the bacteria that was left on the brush from when I had previously used it. I tend to wash my brushes when I'm doing my skincare routine in the bathroom and this helps me to remember to deep clean them and remove all of the bacteria. I have also written a post all about deep cleaning your makeup brushes if you would like to know how I clean mine.

  6. I’ve had to mix and match my foundations a few times to get my shade just right - matching my skin is so difficult! I usually have one shade that’s a bit too light and then another that’s just a bit too dark for me and have to mix them together to attempt to get my shade.

I’ve never baked before, but I do see Nabela Noor use bake a lot on her youtube channel - wasn’t sure if I was doing makeup all wrong without baking!

Yes! I’ve added my liquid highlighter after using setting powder and it wouldn’t have the look I wanted! I’ll have to remember to use It before seeing powder and blush!

I never thought of wetting my eyeshadow brush before! To get extra pigment I’m always layering - some eyeshadows really need help with pigmentation.

Yes it’s so important to clean makeup brushes and sponges, I tend to always say ’tomorrow’ but when they’re all clean makeup applies so much better!

  9. These are such great tips - I would never have thought of mixing foundations but that's a brilliant way to get a customised blend, genius. The best tip I've picked up is to apply a flesh coloured (not white) eyeliner on the inner rim to brighten the eyes. Bookmarking this post for future reference, thank you! Lisa x

  10. Fabulous tips here! I'm really trying to up my make up game and soak up as much information as possible so your post has been extremely helpful. Trying to match my shade range is so hard, I can never quite find the perfect one, I'll have to try mixing them together. I always make sure to clean my brushes and sponges, I remember hearing how much of a bacteria breeding ground they are!

  12. I've never actually mixed any foundations, I always worry that they'll end up separating on my face but maybe it's something I need to try! I always wet my brushes when I'm using a shimmer/glitter so it REALLY pops on my eyes :-) I also think it's really important to either apply a moisturiser or primer before applying makeup - makeup on dry skin is a massive no!

  13. I am in no way an expert in wearing make up but this is easy to follow and really informative. I never have tried baking but have always seen others do it perfectly. I might need to have a go. Also I might try blending foundations. Thank you for the useful tips.
