Being a Beauty Therapist I have a love for all things skincare and now having this blog I am able to talk about it all the time which is even better! I have also recently become obsessed with YouTuber Hyram and his channel SkincareByHyram where he makes skincare reaction videos and he will review different skincare brands and their products and watching his videos made me fall back in love with skincare ingredients and which ones are better for different skin concerns. In today's post, I'll be sharing with you the best ingredients that you should be looking out for in your skincare products!

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid is the best ingredient for exfoliating the face and this ingredient is also an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid which is a group of natural and synthetic ingredients that if they are formulated properly can exfoliate the uppermost layer of the skin), glycolic acid is known as the gold standard ingredient. This ingredient has the ability to penetrate the upmost layers of the skin to reveal the better-looking skin underneath. It also has the natural ability to hydrate the skin by teaching it to hold in moisture better, making this a great ingredient for dry and also acne-prone skin types.

Products containing Glycolic Acid:

Glycerin

Glycerin is a natural component and is also hygroscopic which means that it can draw moisture from the air around us and it also helps to keep moisture in the skin, this also happens in the ingredient we just spoke about above Glycolic Acid. Studies have shown that this ingredient mimics the skins natural moisture factor which means that this ingredient is perfect for all skin types. Glycerin has numerous amounts of benefits other than hydrating the skin like it helps to shield the skin from environmental sources of irritation. Glycerin also has a long history of safe use and is considered non-allergenic and suitable for breakout-prone skin making this the perfect all-round product!

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a water-soluble vitamin which works with the natural substances in the skin in the skin to help minimise the appearance of enlarged pores and reduces sebum production for oily skin, improve uneven skin tone, soften fine lines and wrinkles, brighten dull skin and strengthen the surface of the skin. This ingredient also helps to reduce the impact of environmental damage because of its ability to improve the surface of the skin (barrier) and can help repair signs of past damage. Niacinamide is also an ingredient which works really well paired with other ingredients like retinol, AHA's, BHA's and antioxidants.

Products containing Niacinamide:

Lactic Acid

Lactic Acid is another AHA similar to Glycolic Acid (water-soluble) and its also a chemical exfoliant. Lactic Acids stays on the outermost layers of the skin and it unglues dead skin cells to reveal brighter and more even skin and it also adds additional moisture to the skin. This is an ingredient that suits all skin types that want brighter and hydrated skin. Lactic Acid is also a good chemical exfoliator for people who have sensitive skin and more cautious about exfoliating.

Products containing Lactic Acid:
Salicylic Acid is a BHA (beta hydroxy acid which is an exfoliating agent which are oil-soluble). BHA's are considered the gold standard for blemish prevention. Salicylic Acid is oil soluble which means that it can penetrate the skin easily and is able to soften and dissolve keratin which clogs the pores, this helps to diminish the appearance of breakouts and helps to prevent future breakouts. This ingredient is also great at being anti-inflammatory which calms the skin and reduces redness.

Products containing Salicylic Acid
Hyaluronic Acid is the key to smooth and hydrated skin, our own skin cells can actually produce hyaluronic acid to maintain the skins moisture level but because of ageing and other environmental effects, the levels can dip a bit. Hyaluronic acid is essential at maintaining the skin's hydration because it is a humectant which means it draws moisture from the air around and reduces the loss of moisture. Just one gram of hyaluronic acid can hold up to six litres of water and can regulate the moisture within a cell! This ingredient doesn't strip the skin or cause any downtime when applied so it's an ingredient that most skin types will benefit from.

  3. Glycolic is too strong for my sensitive skin but I absolutely love lactic and salicylic as more gentle options. And hyaluronic is a must in just about everything for me. I need to try more stuff with niacinamide in x
