I have been using skincare for years now on and off but in the last few years, I have really started to take it seriously. Skincare is a passion of mine and because I'm a beauty therapist I get to also help other people with their skin concerns. Starting out with Skincare can be hard and confusing so in today's post, I'll be sharing my Skincare Tips For Beginners!

SPF is the most important product in your routine!

You can have the best routine with all the best products but if you don't use an SPF then it really doesn't matter. SPF should be the foundation of every skincare routine because it is the product that protects the skin the most. SPF protects the skin from UV rays that can cause wrinkles, dullness, uneven skin and even pigmentation, having an SPF in your routine will also help to slow down the ageing process in the skin. With SPF the best time to apply it would be at the end of your routine in the morning to make sure that your skin has maximum protection. Some people can be scared of applying SPF to their face because it might clog their pores or can cause a white cast but there are so many amazing SPF's that are specifically formulated to be used on the face and they aren't all super expensive.

Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise!

After SPF the next best product is moisturiser. Everybody needs to have a good moisturiser in their routine even if you have the oiliest skin you still need a suitable moisturiser! Moisturiser is one of the main products in your skincare routine that maintains the skins healthy cells and reduces the chances of the skin becoming very dry or very oily. Moisturiser is a crucial product in maintaining the skins moisture barrier, we all need this to protect our skin from irritants and to keep the skin feeling nourished and healthy. I used to have very oily skin and I used to think that I didn't need a moisturizer but I was very wrong, this actually caused my skin to become more oily because it was working overtime to help keep my skin hydrated. It doesn't matter what skin type you do have, everyone needs a good moisturiser that suits their skin type to give your skin the best results!

Don't overload your skin with different products

I know we have all seen those routines with 50 steps with loads of different products being put on the skin and while this is not terrible it also isn't necessary. All our skin really needs is a good cleanser, moisturiser and SPF most of the other products are just added bonuses. I am a skincare junkie so I do like to use a few more products than that but it's at a maximum of around 5 products in my routine. The reason we don't want to add too many products to our skincare routines is that there is a higher chance of irritation because there would be so many ingredients on the skin and it could become too much over time creating sensitivity. Even though I wouldn't recommend 50 different products in your routine you can add products like serums and toners depending on your skin concerns and skin type. The more simple your routine is the easier it is to know which product do and don't work for your skin.

Try to avoid fragranced products

Fragrance is an ingredient that is obviously added to different products to give them a lovely scent which can be really nice but it can also be something that causes irritation to the skin which can result in sensitivity or other reactions like acne. It is hard to fully avoid fragrance because it's in almost everything but it should say on the ingredients list Frangrance or Perfum followed by chemical sounding words which are the fragrances. The main products to avoid having fragrance in is products that you leave on the skin like moisturiser or serums if it is included in products like cleansers because the products that get washed away and won't stay on the skin to cause irritation. Whenever you're looking for a new product make sure to do your research to see what fragrance is included!

Always do a double cleanse

Doing a double cleanse is another really important step in your skincare routine. Your first cleanse should be with either a cleansing oil, balm or micellar water because these products will break through any makeup, oils or impurities and then your second cleanse can be a cleanser of your choosing that will then further cleanse the skin getting it ready for further products. The second cleanser should be a product that should be targetted towards your skin concern, for example, a hydrating cleanser if you have dry skin or a purifying gel wash for oily skin. Doing a double cleanse is the best way to make sure that the skin is fully clean and has no more makeup on, having even small traces of makeup or impurities on the skin can cause clogged pores and then spots.

  1. Great post! I've been trying to improve my skincare game at the moment and I've been noticing the difference in my skin. I agree about trying to avoid fragrance as my skin always responds better to fragrance-free products.

    1. Thank you! I had the same issue before. I didn’t know why my skin was flaring up and reacting then I realised it was because of the added fragrance! X

  3. Great post! I love my new SPF moisturiser and I've definitely seen a difference in my acne, which is great! I also think it's important that you've made moisturiser a key ingredient of any skincare routine- I have oily skin, but my skin can still get dried out, and it's important to have that barrier between my face and my make up. Thanks for sharing :)

  6. Great tips! I am probably not the greatest with my skincare routine, but I definitely make sure I use moisturiser! My skin would probably be super dry if I didn't. I also try to use products that don't have fragrance in as I do have really sensitive skin so I know that if I'm not too careful I could end up getting irritated skin from certain products. Great post, thank you for sharing! x
