{Previously Gifted} Back in August 2020, I wrote a post all about the best ingredients to look out for in your skincare routine and because there are so many different ingredients out there I knew I had to make a part two. In the skincare world, there are so many brands using so many different ingredients that it gets hard to know what is good or bad for the skin and that's where this post comes in. Today I'm going to be sharing with you more of the best ingredients to look out for in your skincare!

Retinol

Retinol is an ingredient that is a type of Retinoid which is made from Vitamin A. Retinol is an ingredient that most skincare specialists swear by because it can alter the behaviour of ages cells to make them act more youthful making it the perfect ingredient for anti-ageing products. This ingredient can smooth the texture of the skin, accelerate skin renewal and reduce the signs of ageing. Not all Retinols are the same meaning it comes in many different strengths meaning it is important to do your research before trying it out to avoid having a reaction on the skin, for example, skincare may include retinol palmitate which is the weakest of the retinol or retinol which is stronger and the most tolerable for the skin. With retinol, it's best to start off slow and then work your way up to get your desired effect.

Products containing Retinol:

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is an essential nutrient that supports the skin and it delivers a number of incredible benefits for the skin. Levels of vitamin A in the skin are reduced every day due to environmental factors and being exposed to sunlight and this can cause the skin to look unhealthy. Vitamin A has the ability to normalise how skin cells function to behave in a healthier and younger way leaving the skin looking radiant. This ingredient also helps to improve problematic skin conditions such as acne, it leaves the skin less oily and more balanced. Another key benefit of Vitamin A is that it helps to speed up the healing process, preventing breakouts and supporting the skins immune system.

Products containing Vitamin A:

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an ascorbic acid that means its a vitamin that isn't produced by the body, the only way to get it into the body is by taking supplements or in certain foods like citrus fruits like oranges. To get the best benefits from Vitamin C on your skin is to apply it topically. Vitamin C has many benefits for the skin because it produces collagen which can then thicken the skin and this will help to diminish fine lines and leave a more youthful appearance. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant this means that it can protect the skin cells from free radical damage caused by UV exposure. Vitamin C can also inhibit melanin production which means that it can lighten hyperpigmentation marks and even skin tone. Another key benefit of using Vitamin C is that it helps to repair sun damage and collagen loss by encouraging healthy cell turnover.

Products containing Vitamin C:

Peptides

Peptides are made up of amino acids which are fragments of protein. Proteins are very important for the skin because they work as building blocks for the skin, without peptides the skin won't remain intact and this can cause the loss of firmness in the skin and cause fine lines and wrinkles. When peptides are applied onto the skin they work at sending messages to the skin to trigger skin cells to build products like collagen and elastin, which help to smooth and plump out the skin. Peptides have also been proven to help the skin with hydrating, smoothing and firming the skin creating a more youthful appearance.

Products containing Peptides :
BHA's are a type of oil-soluble acids that are able to get deep into the pores on the skin and target oil glands that are overproducing sebum (oil) and they help to decrease the amount of oil that is secreted. BHA's are great to use on people who have oily skin and also acne-prone skin because it reduces the amount of oil produced it will also help with preventing spots. BHA's work on both the surface and in the pores on the skin, it is best suited for normal and oily skin types, BHA's also have a natural soothing effect on the skin so it is gentle enough for sensitive skins who can also suffer acne-prone skin.

Products containing BHA's
Slightly different from BHA'S, AHA's are water-soluble acids that are derived from fruits or sugar cane. AHA's help to peel away the surface of the skin and then more evenly pigmented skin cells replace them leaving the skin feeling smoother and softer. AHA's are often safe to use on all skin types but I would be aware if you have very dry or sensitive skin. This ingredient can also enhance the skins natural moisturising factors in the skin and AHA's have been proven to work well at reducing the effects of sun damage on the skin. AHA's and BHA's can be used together or on their own depending on your skin concerns.
