I am a person who loves a bargain, I love affordable drugstore makeup but I also love the pricier options of Highend Makeup and sometimes it's hard to know what products to splurge on and what to save on like do we need to spend £20 on a lipstick. Over the years I have tried out a lot of different products with different price ranges and have realised there are definitely products you want to spend a little extra money on and some that are more affordable but still great quality. In today's post, I'll be sharing with you what products to splurge on vs what to save on!

When To Splurge!

Moisturiser

Moisturiser is one of the most important skincare products that you will apply to your skin so it is a product that I would always spend a little bit more money on. Moisturiser is such an important product because it helps to maintain healthy skin and also keep it protected. More inexpensive moisturiser options tend to be filled with more skin harming and irritating ingredients whereas moisturisers that you spend a little bit more money on tend to have better and higher quality ingredients that are more tailored to your specific skincare concerns. When I say splurge I usually mean over the £15 mark, you do not need to spend over £50 on a moisturiser all I would suggest doing is just double-check the ingredients on the back and make sure that you are getting your money's worth. One of the main reasons I like to spend a little bit more on my moisturiser is that it is a product that you apply and it gets soaked into the skin but products like cleansers that you can wash off I would suggest saving on!

Hair Tools

This might sound like a bit of a strange one but I have definitely learnt it the hard way. I have spent less than £10 on products like hairdryers and hair straighteners before and have always been really disappointed in how long they last and how well they work. When you are applying heat directly onto your hair the main goal is to keep your hair protected and when you are using inexpensive tools they won't be doing your hair any favours and can even cause more damage. I straighten my hair quite often so I need a product that is hot enough to straighten my hair effectively and not damage it so I have been using my GHD Hair Straighteners for around 10 years now! That is the longest a hair tool has lasted for me and yes they are expensive but they are definitely worth it. At the time spending £150 on a hair tool seems a lot but if you think about it over 10 years it's practically nothing. When my hair straighteners die one day I will definitely buy another pair of GHD's.

Eyeshadow Palettes

I found this one difficult to decide on where it should go because I am a lover of the affordable eyeshadow palette but overall I would say that splurging on a quality eyeshadow palette will definitely give you the best looks. When I say splurging I mean over £15 which I think is a good enough price without being too expensive, personally I wouldn't spend over £60 for an eyeshadow palette because you can get some really amazing quality shadows from great high-end brands for around the £30 - £40 mark. I have found that when I have spent a little bit more on my eyeshadow palettes the quality of the eyeshadows themselves are slightly better, they have less fallout, are easier to blend and have more pigmentation. I would never say to only ever buy high-end palettes because I have a huge collection of affordable palettes but sometimes the more you spend the better the product.
This is another item that I wasn't sure where to put it because I have some amazing inexpensive foundations but on the whole, if I think about it my all-time favourite foundations are more on the expensive side.  One of my favourite foundations is the Estee Lauder Double Wear which is pretty pricey but it is definitely worth it, it applies to the skin like a dream, blends out so easily and is super long-lasting. When you are spending a little bit more on products you want them to last and still look amazing on the skin after hours of wearing. Another reason why I like to spend a little more on my foundations is usually that they have a wider range of shades and undertones where more affordable foundations have fewer options which makes it difficult to find the right shade.

When To Save!

Cleanser

Not all skincare products need to be super expensive, cleansers are one of the products that you can actually save a couple of pennies on and buy the more affordable option. All of the cleaners that I've used in my skincare routine have all been more affordable options that work really well at cleaning the skin, removes dirt and oils and getting the skin ready for your other skincare products. Even dermatologists now recommend more affordable options because they do just as well even sometimes better than the more expensive products. Cleansers are also a product that is washed off the skin and doesn't sit and sink into the skin meaning the highest quality ingredients don't need to be used to get the job done and leave the skin looking and feeling healthy.

Lipsticks

This one might be controversial because I know a lot of people love high-end lipsticks but I think that there are so many high-quality affordable options that you don't need to spend over £10 on lipstick. Back in the day when I was around 15, 16 I thought that MAC lipsticks were the best things in the world but over the years I have found so many more affordable dupes and lipsticks that are even better quality but are also cheaper so now I am 100% a save on lipstick girls. If you have a high-end lipstick that you love I am sure that there is probably an affordable dupe out there that you wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between the two. I would much rather spend a little bit more extra money on products like foundations than lipsticks because I've even tried an amazing lipstick that looked great and felt comfortable to wear for only £1 from MUA.
Over the years I have tried so many different brow products ranging from high end to high street and I have come to the conclusion that you really do not need to break the bank for eyebrow products. I used to be obsessed with products like Anatasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow and Benefit Goof Proof Brow Pencil but when I've run out of these I've replaced them with more affordable options that work just as well and sometimes even better. A lot of the more expensive brow products always have affordable dupes like with Dip Brow the Revolution Pro Brow Pomade is such a good dupe for this product and is more than half the amount cheaper. Another product that I would never overpay for again would be brow gels, as long as they keep your brows in place and set them down nicely you shouldn't need to pay more than £10! My favourite brow gel at the moment is from I Heart Revolution and it's only £5 and it fills in my brows as well as setting them.
Since starting my makeup collection one of the things that I have a lot of is makeup brushes (definitely more than I need) and I've tried very affordable brushes from eBay and Amazon and I've also used pretty expensive brushes and I've decided that, to be honest, I prefer the more affordable options. Every day I do my makeup I use the same set of brushes that I got from Amazon for only £8 and they work amazingly at applying my makeup they are also made really well so no brush hairs fall out when they have been washed. There have definitely been some more expensive brushes that I've loved but overall I have found some really great brushes that do just as good as a job as the more expensive options. I used to be obsessed with the Beauty Blender but £17 for a makeup sponge is a bit expensive but I tried some more affordable options and have found an amazing dupe in the B. Makeup Sponge, it applies makeup like a dream and costs less than half the price!

Knowing what to splurge on and what to save on when it comes to beauty products has really been life-saving, it has saved me time buying unnecessary things and it can also save me a little extra money! What products do you like to splurge and save on?

  5. Definitely agree on this stuff! I also find that eyeliner/mascara quality can also really matter when creating your desired effect with makeup. What's your take on those?

    1. I have used both affordable and expensive mascara and eyeliner products before and have loved both, I think it depends on the brand but usually I would go for the more affordable option x
