Now that the weather has turned a bit colder our skin needs a bit of a pick me up. As soon as the colder weather hits my skin becomes a lot drier and that's when I like to introduce more hydrating skincare products into my routine. In today's post, I'll be sharing with you the best skincare ingredients to include in your routine to help with drier skin!

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is an ingredient that I know we have all heard about, over the last couple of months it has become one of the main ingredients that people look out for in their skincare. Hyaluronic Acid is actually a molecule that is naturally found in your skin that binds to water to help keep the skin plump and hydrated and it also helps to give the skin a glowy look. Hyaluronic Acid helps to increase the moisture in the skin,  the collagen in our skin binds with the water in the skin and that helps to keep the skin looking youthful and plump. When we age, collagen and hyaluronic acid decreases which means the skin loses moisture which means the skin can prematurely age and become dehydrated making hyaluronic acid very important for our skin.

Glycerin

Glycerin is a colourless and odourless ingredient that comes from plant sources and it is a humectant which means that it is a type of moisturising agent that brings water from the deeper levels of the skin and the air to the outer layers of the skin which means that it actually attracts water to itself. When Glycerin is used in skincare products it is used with another ingredient which is also a moisturising agent and it traps the moisture that it draws into the skin. Glycerin also helps to slow the evaporation of water from your skin to help fight the chronic winter dryness that our skin so Glycerin should definitely be in your skincare routine this winter!

Products containing Glycerin:
Lactic Acid is usually known for being an exfoliating ingredient like glycolic acid, but these ingredients are also humectants just like Glycerin. Lactic acid probably shouldn't be your direct source of hydration because they do also work as mild exfoliators but while this ingredient is removing dead skin cells it is also keeping the skin hydrated. When the skins moisture barrier is intact the hydration in the skin is locked in and minimises the loss of water in the skin. This will help to revitalise the skin and keep it from looking dull or dry and it also helps to keep the skin hydrated and moisturised.

Products containing Lactic Acid:
Ceramides are one of the most popular ingredients used to fight off dry skin and they are a very important part of the stratum corneum which is the skins natural protective barrier. By creating a barrier for the skin Ceramides helps to maintain moisture by locking it in and reducing dryness and irritation. Ceramides may also help the epidermis (upper layer of the skin) from any environmental damage causing the skin to become dehydrated. Even though the skin is made from ceramides they are reduced over time and this can lead to dull skin and help minimise these effects you should add this ingredient into your skincare routine.
