I was around 14 years old is when my obsession with makeup began and my collection started to grow and over the years I have found some really great tips to keep your makeup lasting longer. Anybody who wears makeup knows that longevity is really important and keeping our makeup on all day is definitely the main goal. In today's post, I'll be sharing with all of my tips to keep your makeup lasting longer.

1. Keep your skin smooth and hydrating

The first step to keep your makeup lasting all day is to keep your skin smooth and hydrated. The secret to long-lasting makeup is to make sure that you start off with a silky smooth canvas. The worst thing you can do before applying makeup is not take care of your skin as the makeup will cling to dry patches on your face and you won't be able to create the look that you're wanting. To keep my skin extra smooth I make sure that before im applying makeup I do my skincare routine, this will guarantee the perfect base to apply makeup on top of. The products that I to use to give me perfectly smooth skin is the Procoal Charcoal Exfoliator, which removes all of my dead skin cells with the added ingredient of Allantoin which encourages natural exfoliation while keeping the skin looking and feeling extra soft. The next product that I like to use on my skin is Pixi Glow Tonic this product removes excess oil and impurities which also helps to give the skin the perfect base for makeup. Lastly, moisturising is key even if you're going to wear a primer. The moisturiser I've been loving to wear before makeup is the Environ Super Moisturiser, this moisturiser is a creamy consistency which is easily absorbed and leaves the skin feeling comfortable, smooth and hydrated.

2. Use a primer that's suitable for your skin type

My next tip is very important and it can make or break your makeup for the day. Wearing a primer that doesn't suit your skin type will only just reduce the longevity of your makeup. My second tip is to make sure that when selecting a primer you go for one that suits your skin type and what you want out of your makeup. For example, I have pretty oily skin the primer that would suit me the most is a pore filling and oil control product and I wouldn't go for a hydrating and dewy primer because it would make me look a lot shiner quicker. The primers that I have been loving recently is actually the Bare Minerals Prime Time primers which come in a few different finishes original, neutralising, oil control and brightening. I actually got a set of all of them but mainly only use two which is the original primer that I love for smoothing out my skin and the oil control which helps to keep my skin looking smooth and my pores all filled.

3. Lightly layer your foundation

After you have applied the right primer for your skin type its then time for foundation. Picking your foundation is very important, I always try and go for foundations that has long-wearing in the name because they usually work better at longevity. It doesn't matter whether the foundation is high end like my favourite Estee Lauder Double Wear or drugstore like my other favourite MUA Pro Base, you can find great foundations anywhere. Once you have decided what foundation you want to go for that's when you use this tip. To keep your makeup lasting longer I apply my foundation with thin layers then wait for it to dry and then apply another layer on top and build it that way instead of applying one thick layer which can make the skin look cakey and thick. I read about this tip in a magazine years ago and it has always stuck with me, I use this tip a lot of the time and it has really helped to keep my makeup lasting longer but also it looks so much better even after hours of wearing the product.

4. Make sure you set with powder

I cannot stress how important it is to set your makeup with powder and I know a few of you dewy skin-loving people out there will be dreading this but even for you, it is very important. Not all powders out there is a matte powder you can also find powders whether loose or pressed that leave the skin still looking very glowy and luminous. The reason we should all be setting our skin is that the powder acts as a barrier to outside pollution and keeps the makeup in place all day. It depends on what foundations I use but I have a few different powders that I like to use to set the skin, my favourite is the Rimmel Stay Matte which keeps my skin set and matte all day, If I want to set my face with a powder with some colour to it I use the LA Girl Pro Face powder which add more coverage and longevity to my makeup and lastly for a loose powder I like to use the GOSH Prime + Set powder which is a really finely milled powder which you can lightly dust over the face for a luminous long-lasting finish.

5. Setting Spray, Setting Spray, Setting Spray!

This is probably the most important tip out of all and I think its the thing that people forget to do the most. Setting spray is so important to seal in all the other layers of makeup and to keep the skin looking gorgeous all day. Again with setting sprays, you can get all different finishes depending on what look you are looking for, you can get some that keep your skin matte or dewy. The setting sprays that I like the most are Urban Decay All Nighter which is a heavy-duty spray which keeps your makeup on for hours. MAC Fix + which is another favourite of mine to keep my makeup on all day but also looking great and lastly I love using the Gerard Cosmetics Slay All Day spray which smells amazing but also keeps my skin looking flawless for hours!

  1. Great tips! I rarely use make-up anymore, but oh I still have nightmares of my teen years when I applied an extra layer of foundation thinking it might make my pimples disappear. No such luck :D Thankfully I've learned since and now make sure my skin is well moisturized and that I don't put any excess make-up on my sensitive skin. Eyes can pop, that's enough for me :) x

  3. I lost my setting spray a while ago but the Urban Decay one was my absolute staple to keeping my makeup on and lasting all day! I've found the Too Faced hangover primer makes your skin glow whilst also sticking to your foundation and keeping it on literally ALL day. And OF COURSE we can't forget powder! The absolute epitome of long lasting makeup, right? :) x

  5. Because my skin is so dry I don't really have an issue with my makeup moving or not lasting (probably the only good thing about being dry). But I love that your first point was about skin, even though it doesn't fade much it always wears a lot better when my skin is slightly less dry and looking healthier. Great tips! x
